But when a politician makes likability a substitute for authority, his opponents make hatred a substitute for opposition.

Seems like a poor plan to me - the politician in question is still the one setting the tone. Still the decider.

The "opposition" is being reactive only, and a reactive stance is never one of power or efficacy.

Also - by definition Opposition must OPPOSE or get the heck out of the way of those who will.
